Efficient and Accurate Multirate Simulation of HVDC Converters in a Partitioned Network Environment

چکیده
Multirate simulation of electric networks exhibiting a wide variety of time constants decreases the simulation runtimes by exploiting the property of circuit latency. The fundamental idea is to use different integration steps for distinct elements and/or parts of the network according to requirements of accuracy for each element. HVDC converters are ideally suited for latency exploitation since the differences in step size requirements are well defined. This paper presents the recent developments for an efficient and accurate circuit latency exploitation as well as the results obtained when a twelve-pulse HVDC converter is simulated using this technique. Latency is exploited using direct integration methods instead of the traditional iterative methods, making the approach suitable for real-time simulation. Comparisons are made with the traditional single step solution in order to emphasize the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

Efficient HVDC Converter Model for Real Time Transients Simulation
An efficient model has been developed to simulate High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Converters in real-time transient simulators. Real time performance of 45 μs per solution step has been achieved for a 12-pulse monopolar converter and 81 μs for the bipolar converter using a single processor Pentium Pro 200 MHz desktop computer. The HVDC converter model is solved simultaneously with the power ...
متن کاملHVDC Feeder Solution for Electric Railways
For AC railway power supply systems with a different frequency than the public grid, high-voltage AC (HVAC) transmission lines are common, connected to the catenary by transformers. This paper suggests an alternative design based on an HVDC (High Voltage DC) feeder, which is connected to the catenary by converters. Such an HVDC line would also be appropriate for DC-fed railways and AC-fed railw...

AC-HVDC-AC energy conversion systems using modular multilevel voltage-source converters (MMC) are becoming very popular to integrate distributed energy systems to the main grid. MMC AC-DC-AC converters are also being considered for large HVDC transmissions systems. Such multi-level converters pose a serious problem for HIL simulators required for control, protection design and testing due to th...
متن کاملBenefits of Operating a Four Terminal HVDC Network with a Normally Open Point
It is likely that any HVDC grids will evolve over time and will likely be multi-vendor and use several different technologies. This paper studies a four terminal network where the interconnecting link is operated as a normally open point. This allows the network to be reconfigured in the event of DC side fault, without the need for DC circuit breakers. The network uses the popular Modular Multi...
متن کاملReal Time simulation of MMCs using the State- Space Nodal Approach
The Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) topology is becoming an attractive solution for HVDC and FACTS systems. MMC structures are composed from several hundreds to thousands of half-bridge converters. Such large numbers of power switches and electrical nodes introduce important computational difficulties in electromagnetic transient (EMT) type programs. This becomes particularly more complex fo...
